Ka-bar Knives: A Brand You Trust
Soon after its introduction in the mid-1920's, the KA-BAR trademark became widely known and respected. There have been many versions of how the KA-BAR name came to be, but all evidence points to a letter received from a fur trapper. This particular fur trapper's testimonial turned out to be the most significant ever received by the company.
He wrote, in very rough English, that his gun had jammed and that he had therefore relied on his knife to kill a wounded bear that was attacking him. In thanking the company for their quality product the trapper described using his knife to kill the bear. All that was legible of his scrawled writing was "k a bar". The company was so honored by this testimonial that they adopted this phrase and used it as their trademark, KA-BAR.

My new Ka-bar had only one (1) fault.
I had expected the butt cap to be screwed on and pinned as the original design.
My plan for using the knife as a utility hammer and a back-up weapon. Since my primary intent was not met, I give the over-all a low 4 star. Had the butt cap been of original design, the rating would be an overwhelming 5 star. All other aspects of the sheath and knife have met my expectations.

This is the contemporary version of the knife I carried in Vietnam. The only reason that I didn't give it 5 stars is because the new model has deleted the edge on the forward third of the top of the blade. The the slashing up-stroke is no longer a tactical option. So the first thing I did was to put the edge back on it.
The new model also comes with an oil-tanned sheath (where the Vietnam-era issue knife came with a water-tanned sheath that didn't much like constantly being soaked, then dried).
Though maybe it isn't as high-tech and sexy as today's knives, if you really want a rugged, dependable knife that won't let you down, even after all the abuse a Marine can give it, then this knife is my hands-down choice.
